| Doctors and stuff |
[Dec. 30th, 2009|06:44 pm] |
This might sound stupid, but I don't know much about doctors because I've been avoiding them for almost 10 years now, because I'm scared of doctors,(Mock me if you must D: ) but I'm reaching the point when I just can't avoid anymore.
Family doctors are hard to find, but doctors in emergency clinics are doctors too, right? One has a fancy office and the other has a small crappy office, but they are both qualified doctors who both can help me find my health problem...right? Can I just go in a clinic and tell the doctor: I have this and this problem, can you tell me how to cure it? I may have to get my blood tested too, but they do this in CLSCs, right? Will the emergency clinic call me to tell me my blood results, or do only family doctors do that?
Also, my mother has a family doctor. Will they allow me to take an appointment easily with him, since I'm family and I would assume that's what it means to be a family doctor? |

| New Year's decorations? |
[Dec. 30th, 2009|06:26 pm] |
Does anyone know where I could buy some NYE decorations? I'd like some fancy horns, hats, and glitter, but my local dollar store has already moved on to Valentine's Day decorations! Can anyone suggest where to look tomorrow (last minute, I know)--I'll only have time to search in the Plateau, so suggestions in that neighbourhood would be much appreciated!!
Thanks a million and happy, happy 2010! |

| looking for: stove (&/or fridge) |
[Dec. 30th, 2009|03:22 pm] |
Last week an element refused to turn off, so we had to pull the fuse. Yesterday, both oven elements died halfway through a batch of cookies. We officially NEED a new, full-sized (30") stove. The fridge is in nearly as dire a condition. I have $150 to spend, hopefully on both. Luckily, we've got a pickup, so can collect without having to worry abut delivery fees, but still!
Anyone have suggestions of where I might be able to find something that was manufactured within this decade & that price range? I've been searching all over kijiji, craigslist & lespac.com today, but no luck on anything that fits my prerequisites...
Thanks in advance! |

| New Years happenings |
[Dec. 29th, 2009|09:45 pm] |
Hey Montreal, I'm a Torontonian heading out to your fine city (which I love) for NYE. My best friend and travel companion unfortunately has some other obligations and it's looking like I will actually be alone for the actual "New Years" portion of the night...
So now I'm trying to find something to do for the night! Something ideal for me to do would be something like an indie rock/electropop etc sort of a concert. I'm into Handsome Furs, Junior Boys, and even folk like Iron and Wine or DeVotchKa. And before this thing came up we were planning to go to Korova to go dancing. Any suggestions along these lines? Or anything else fun happening, I'm welcoming ideas, as long as it's cheap and no-frills (I'm not really a clubbing kinda girl), and safe for a young girl.
Thanks in advance! |

| Legal change of first name |
[Dec. 28th, 2009|11:28 pm] |
I'm one of those kids with a foreign name that's hard to pronounce who has pretty much always gone by an English name, although my birth name is still the legal one. I'd like to change that, and I've found the official website of le directeur de l'état civil and printed the preliminary analysis form and everything. I'm still a minor until next December, but I'd really rather have this done by the time I go back to school in fall. So, does anyone have any experience in the matter and can tell me if it's a long and arduous process, if my reasons are considered valid, if my request will be treated differently whether my parents apply for me as a minor or if I apply as a legal adult? Thanks! |

| International Moving |
[Dec. 28th, 2009|05:25 pm] |
Hello All,
I am moving from Alaska to Montreal (our flight leaves the night of 30 December), but I am having a heck of a time finding any company that will move "irregular" sized things such as bikes, mattresses, long boxes, etc. For the normal U-Haul boxes it looks like we will probably be using Fed Ex, but they won't take our other items. We also called many many companies such as Carlile, Lynden, and Mayflower to try to move everything together, but the lowest price we could get was a little over 3,000 dollars with Mayflower, and that is way beyond our budget (the other companies wouldn't even do our move with household goods). Has anyone else ever done a US/Canada move such as this? What did you do? I would hate to have to leave so many items behind just because they cannot fit into regular moving boxes.
Thank you! |

| Bubble Tea? |
[Dec. 28th, 2009|02:08 pm] |
What's your favourite Bubble Tea place in Montreal?
I am looking for one that serves "real juices" not just powders they add to tea.
I usually go to Magic Idea in Chinatown but am looking for other options, preferably in the Village or Plateau areas.
ps: i really, really don't recommend Yoy's bubble tea on St-Denis/Mont-Royal :( |

| Macaroni and Cheese |
[Dec. 27th, 2009|11:36 pm] |
Is there a place downtown that makes delicious macaroni and cheese? I am in the mood for it but I don't do kraft dinner and I really don't feel like making it myself. Making a roux is no fun. Are there restaurants that even sell this comfort food as a main dish?
Also to the LJ user who offered to teach me to needle felt, I totally lost your comment in my e-mail inbox. I didn't forget about you and I'm still pretty interested in learning to needle felt. If you read this, let me know if you still want to teach me :) |

| looking for a good bank to deal with... |
[Dec. 27th, 2009|02:16 pm] |
i'm about at my wits END with CIBC and their fees and limits and overall shitty service! i've had nothing but problems with them since i opened my account with them in the summer.
i apologize if this isn't entirely appropriate for the community, but i was hoping to get some opinions. who do you bank with? i'm looking for a no fee, or low fee, bank to get a chequing account with. i have a visa with CIBC that is maxed out, but i expect to have it payed off in the coming months, at which point i want to switch banks entirely, cancelling that visa and closing my chequing account at CIBC. i've heard good things about BMO and Scotia, but i'm leaning more towards a credit union, and would like personal experiences. I'll be a student in the fall, so for now, student accounts are out of the question, but i would like to deal with a bank that offers student accounts (as they are usually no fee) so that i can switch to one when i become a student. can anyone help me out here? thanks in advance for anything you guys can give me! |

| Moderation post follow-up |
[Dec. 27th, 2009|12:06 pm] |
The results of the poll on what to lj-cut or not are in! Well, they've been in for a while, but I kept forgetting to post about them!
First of all, about 93% of people agreed commercial posts should be lj-cut. Therefore, this rule will not change. What will very slightly change is what is considered commercial. The majority of voters have decided that posts where people are trying to sell something for profit are to be lj-cut, as before. The slight change will be that a post where someone is attempting to publicize a product, whether for profit, or not will also need to be lj-cut.
I'll be changing the community rules shortly to reflect this.
Happy Holidays! |

[Dec. 25th, 2009|11:24 am] |
Hello Montréal!
First of all I'd like to wish everyone Marry Xmas and Happy New Year (ou Joyeux Noël et Bonne Année)!!! Smiles to everyone on frequent basis!
Actually as we have just moved to Canada (and precisely Montréal, Lachine). I'd like to ask if anyone knows - is it possible to find somewhere bee wax to buy? Any ideas? I would be really grateful if you provide the names of the shops or places so I could find it later.
Thank you very much beforehand! |

| Shoes (again!) |
[Dec. 23rd, 2009|11:04 pm] |
Hello beautifuls Earlier I posted this sale right before I moved http://community.livejournal.com/montreal/3498338.html
Well, I've since moved and I now have no room for these shoes! I'm offering them ALL for $50. All of them (except for the dark brown boots that sold). That's hundreds of dollars worth of never worn shoes for less than the price of one new pair.
Any takers? I'll even deliver :) |

| Paint, XBox, Job Hunting |
[Dec. 23rd, 2009|09:27 pm] |
Hello Montreal. I have three questions to ask you (triple-banger!)
1. Cheap paint. I have just moved here and would like to paint but am on a tight budget. I hear Renaissance sells paint. I'm going to be trying all the hardware stores and asking them if they have mismatched paint, so I'm looking for a specific suggestion. The rooms can all be different colours, quantity is not an issue!
2. Where is a trustworthy place to get an XBox fixed? The warranty has run out and they charge $130 (Red Ring of Death) for repairs. ;[
3. Job hunting. I know to check with services such as YES and check online (Craigslist and Kijiji), but aside from up and down St. Catherine or St. Denis, where are some good places to walk to look for jobs? I do speak French and live near Metro Beaudry for reference, but it doesn't have to be near there.
Thanks a lot, sorry for asking so many questions! |

| A tip for the ladies... |
[Dec. 23rd, 2009|06:42 pm] |
If you are looking for a Little Black Dress try Reitmans. The one in Place Ville Marie had quite a few (in about 8 styles) and they are all under $30. Also, there is the *nicest* saleslady there. I wish I'd gotten her name.
If you are like me and on the rubenesque side don't despair-- the XL is equivalent to about a 14.
Happy holidays! |

| We need some handy help. |
[Dec. 22nd, 2009|02:47 pm] |
Our bathroom ceiling leaks -- but not every time it rains so our landlord can't find the right place to patch. Between that, the teenagers and the fact that the apt. is old and falling apart our bathroom looks *awful*. There's mildew that might escape and take over the world and sections of plaster are drooping slowly towards the floor.
Company is coming Dec. 31st and I desperately want someone to come and fix things enough that we can slap a coat of paint on the ceiling and walls and hide the mess until the spring when we'll probably get a whole new ceiling. Even the worst job would be better than things are now.
So, if you have an idea of how to hide this mess and some time between now and the 30th please let me know. I'll pay *and* feed you.
Please? |

[Dec. 22nd, 2009|10:29 am] |
Does anyone know of a mover's truck company in Montreal where a friend of mine can rent a truck for a day (he really only needs it for 12 hours) and drop it off at a chain location somewhere near Peterborough, ON? U-Haul rents for 3 days, and it's super expensive, so it'd be a waste. Driving the truck back isn't really an option as he doesn't have a car. Thanks in advance. |

[Dec. 22nd, 2009|01:57 am] |
To the woman on the 104 about 5:15pm today (yesterday when anyone reads this) - THANK YOU for tapping my shoulder and telling me that my earring back was unhooked so that I can fix it before I lost my earring!
Honestly, I appreciate it! :) I was so shocked when she did this because no one is considerate about others anymore, they're always so wrapped up in themselves to take care to notice anything else in the world.
I just wanted to mention this here because it's proof that there are nice people out there! |

| Lavande culinaire / Cooking lavender |
[Dec. 21st, 2009|03:05 pm] |
Hey all,
Anyone know where I could find dry lavender flowers for cooking?
I've heard Jean-Talon market would be a good bet, but if there's any to be found at Atwater market or anywhere else closer to downtown, that would be awesome! If not, I'd like to know which merchants sell lavender at Jean-Talon if possible.
Thanks in advance! |

| Looking for a Yamaha Keyboard |
[Dec. 21st, 2009|02:14 pm] |
My darling son would not practice his clarinet and so has been booted from the orchestra and into keyboard classes at school. Surprisingly he's enjoying them very much and wants to practice at home.
However, he wants to practice on the same (not sold anywhere in the city) keyboards they use at school.
Has anyone seen a Yamaha DGX 250 keyboard anywhere? Or any other keyboard from the Portable Grand series that won't cost an arm and a leg?
Thanks muchly. |

| Wedding Photo Albums |
[Dec. 21st, 2009|08:51 am] |
Hello!
I've been looking for a wedding album as a Christmas gift for someone who is getting married in the spring, but i'm not having much luck. I've been to the Bay, Lozeau, a few other stores on the plaza st. hubert, Winners and another camera shop in the centre eaton. The ones that were left were generally beat up or too expensive - over $150. I know it's not the season for weddings, but does anyone know where else I might find an album?
thanks! |

| Peanut flips |
[Dec. 19th, 2009|01:38 am] |
Does anyone know of any stores in the Montreal area (on the Island, south shore, Laval,) that sells peanut flips?
Peanut flips - a.k.a Erdnüss Flips - are a snack food from Germany. They look like cheesies but taste like peanut butter. They are usually sold in the same kind of packaging that chips are sold in.
I thought Peanut Flips were weird too...until I tried them.
It's probably a long shot, but any tips would be appreciated. |

I'm looking specifically for dried incan berries (aka golden berries) and dried mulberries. Does anyone know where I can find these two, preferably downtown, around Guy-Concordia? Do most grocery stores sell these, do I need to find a specialty store?

Also, what other raw, sun-dried berries or fruits would you recommend for snacking? |

| best bang for your ski buck? |
[Dec. 17th, 2009|10:19 pm] |
So now that winter is here, i've decided to embrace the cold and look for a decent place to ski. It's been a long time since i slapped on some skis and hit the slopes, so i was wondering if there were any ski fans out there who could give their opinion on the best slopes (would prefer the Laurentians, but will be willing to try other places in the Townchips
so in your opinion:
a) where is the best place to ski overall
b) not outrageously overpriced
c) best place for night skiing
d) is not outrageously crowded and has the least amount of hillbillies/speed demons
e) are there places that offer ski/bus packages? I know mcgill has them but they are only for McGill students.
I used to go to Greyrocks and was heartbroken when they closed. Have been to Tremblant but it's too "shi shi" for me. Went to Morin Heights for the night skiing, but that was more than 10 years ago.
I have also heard there are some places on the south shore (mont st. bruno)?
And Happy Holidays everybody :-) |

| On the subject of cleanliness and our streets... |
[Dec. 17th, 2009|05:11 pm] |
This isn't a new, fresh or even remotely interesting topic, but it's one that's always worth reminding.
Now, I can't speak for all areas of town, but in a neighborhood I travel through on a fairly regular basis, that is, the Village, I can't really understand why, and certainly can't begin drawing conclusions of my own but...
Okay, let me put it this way: to you dog owners out there, do you ever imagine that because there's snow covering the streets and sidewalks, that it'll conveniently hide your canine's poop/turds/shit/refuse/by-products/insert clever euphemism here? No, I'm serious, goddammit! You can't walk two blocks without seeing dog turds on the sidewalk!
If it's like that anywhere else in the city, speak up and let us know! And to you bystanders and pedestrians (hell, the motorists too!), if you see a dog take a dump in the street and you can't tell if its owner has a bag at the ready, speak up!! Ask them. Make them feel bad. Call them out, shout, attract people's attention on them.
Or, if you like having a dogshit-covered road system when spring shows its blissful face, just walk on by and give them the thumbs up.
If you have a dog, it's your responsibility to pick up your dog's poop. And if you don't, it's OUR responsibility to rub your nose in it, just like you'd do to a dog if it pooped on your floor. |

| cheap & reliable seamstress? |
[Dec. 17th, 2009|05:01 pm] |
I'm looking to have a couple dresses taken in at the bust, however i'm not looking to pay 25$ per dress. that's the price stitch it gave me and it seems ridiculously overpriced! however, i'm not used to this sort of thing so maybe i'm just being cheap? also, one of these dresses is "leather" so i'm aware it would cost more than usual...but please tell me you guys know of some place i can go!
also, completely off-topic, but does anyone know of any places that can engrave money clips? i'm at a loss for this as well...
TIA!! xx Bianca |

| Proper deep tissue massage therapists? |
[Dec. 17th, 2009|03:12 pm] |
Oh Montreal. The most up to date information I found in the memories was http://community.livejournal.com/montreal/2840631.html from well over a year ago.
I'm looking for a massage therapist in this fine city (downtown, Cote-des-Neiges, NDG, Outremont, Mile End, Rosement... so within that loop of the Metro really) who knows what she/he is doing in terms of deep tissue massage and is able to give insurance receipts. All of the massage places near me are rub and tugs, so I'm not sure where to go. Googling massage therapy can give me a ton of places, but no actual recommendations. Price isn't too important, I just want someone who really knows what they are doing. None of those little oily massages... |
